College Job Openings – Things to Keep in Mind

Looking for college job openings is a task that can be fraught with difficulties, and there will definitely be periods of extreme stress. While we can’t promise you that these tips will make it a cinch to find the job you are looking for, they may help make the process a lot easier.

Explore your options in internship programs. All things being equal, most companies tend to hire people that have served in their summer internship programs instead of those that come in from the cold.

Consider your internship a job interview that is spread out over several weeks. In fact, even if you are not close to graduating yet, you can greatly increase your chances of landing a good job if you approach an internship just as pro-actively as you would a “real” job.

Go for the interview. Even if you feel that the advertised position isn’t exactly what you are looking for, you won’t lose anything by going ahead with the interview anyway. Not only will this prepare you for future interviews with more favorable college job openings, it will also help get your name out to prospective employers who may have something closer to your interests to offer.

Focus on content in your resume. While you will want your resume to look as slick and as polished as possible, you should make sure that the content is just as professional–in fact, even more so.

Most employers are very busy people who won’t even notice the special font that you used or the fancy formatting you spent so much time over. Your skills are what they are interested in above everything else, so it only makes sense to dedicate the bulk of your efforts to presenting your skills in a coherent and professional manner.

Keep it concise. As interested as potential employers for college job openings may be about your skills, they will not necessarily want to pore through a multi page document of flowery prose and filler.

Keep your resume short and to the point. Of course you will want to include all your relevant work experiences and accomplishments, but you should resist the temptation to pad it out to make it seem more impressive.
